Welcome to Scotland’s for Families 2013

Scotland’s for Families is an unbiased online guide to some of the best venues, attractions, locations and activities in Scotland. We’ve visited the places and venues on the site, so you can get a better idea of what to expect, and to make a better decision whether you want to visit too. Five minutes here may be the difference between a good and a great day out, or it could avoid one of those nightmare visits that we’ve all had and would really like to avoid again.

The concept  behind Scotland’s for Families is pretty broad. We’ve tried to think about what families like to know – what the surfaces are like,  where the best views are, whether there are loos or not, and what’s nearby if you’re making a day of it. The information on this site should help all kinds of family days out.

We don’t use promotional blurb from venues. We research and visit the places listed, so if there’s something to be aware of, we’ll do our best to tell you.

Dryhope Tower – worth a visit

Mar22
2013
Leave a Comment Written by Seek Out Scotland

Open: all year – visits should be tailored to the prevailing weather.

Entry: free

Location: off the A708, near Gordon Arms Hotel and the Eastern end of St Mary’s Loch.

If you like peering about towers and castles without guides and custodians, Dryhope might be up your street.

This isn’t one for small children or for a riotous  run about. You can access it off the Southern Upland Way track, but this goes through fields with livestock, so the rules about walking in the countryside apply!

Dryhope belonged to the Scott family. It was the childhood home of Mary Scott, “the Flower of Yarrow”, who later went on to marry the infamous Wat Scott of Harden: you can read a bit about him in the information boards inside the tower.

Renovated in 2003 in order to render it safe for snooping about in, you get great views from what is now the roof, and that involves going up a metal turnpike stair. If it’s windy, the wind makes a great keening noise as it funnels up the stairs.

Dryhope provides a great snapshot of the past and how people lived, and it’s just a tiny bit off the beaten track, which makes it a little bit special.

Free.
No toilets

Innerleithen is relatively close by (if you are travelling by car), with Robert Smail’s Print Works, St Ronan’s Well and a selection of cafés and hotels which serve food.

Leave a Comment Written by Seek Out Scotland

National Museums of Scotland have taken the decision to close the Museum of Costume at Shambellie House, and as such it will not re-open for the 2013 season.

Low visitor numbers and high operational costs are part of the reasons given in the press release: you can read more here.

Having spent happy hours at this museum, we’re sad to report this news.

2013 is The Year of Natural Scotland – so let’s all get out there and enjoy Scotland!

As well as the natural landscape, there are the estates and land around our great built heritage – and it’s a great natural playground too (well, there’s no excuse not to get a bit fitter too…)

Remember, green spaces are everywhere, even in the heart of our cities.
